Oxford Ladies win Captains Trophy in a tense, exciting final

What a difference a year can make! There was no rain to be seen this year. Sun cream and plenty of water was required as this was one of the hottest days of the year.
The semi finalists of Oxford Ladies, Henley, Frilford Heath and Witney Lakes gathered for the 09.00 start. Maureen Rhymes acted as the starter for County Captain who wasn’t able to arrive until lunchtime.
In the first semi final Oxford Ladies played Henley and came out on top winning all three of the matches. In the other semi final Frilford Heath played Witney Lakes with the latter coming out on top to set up the afternoon final between Oxford Ladies and Witney Lakes.
The heat hadn’t subsided and with more sun tan cream applied and water in their bags County Captain Karen Pollard got the final under way.
Clare Fox & Chris Moreby were the first pair from Oxford Ladies playing Fiona Camm & Marie Fitches from Witney Lakes. The second match was Oxford Ladies pair of Debbie Roberts & Heather Watts against Jenny Keeble & Setsuko Horne from Witney Lakes. The final match was between Betty Mitchell & Dawn Torgeson from Oxford Ladies and Helen Clack & Denise Young from Witney Lakes.
What an afternoon of golf this proved to be in the heat. The last match out was a good game and the first score on the board was a 2&1 win for Oxford Ladies from Betty & Dawn.
The first match was all square after 18 holes and headed up the 19th
and then up the 20th too. It was such a shame there had to be loser but
Witney Lakes through Fiona & Marie held their nerve and won on the
20th.
The second match was also all square after 18 holes too after Oxford
Ladies being 3up and 3 to play, Debbie & Heather and Jenny &
Setsuko went up the 19th. A great come back from Witney. Tension was
rising, I could feel it myself watching from the side line. This also
went on to the 20th and was where it finished too. Debbie & Heather
held their nerve to win and to secure victory for Oxford Ladies. It was
such a shame for there to be a loser.
My commiserations went to Witney Lakes and but Congratulations to Oxford Ladies on winning and in such heat out there.
